Please note in relation to the mandatory topics:
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility must be taught and assessed by an approved PLT provider.
- Lawyer’s Skills and the Risk Management component of Work Management and Business Skills can only be taught and assessed by an approved PLT provider or another provider approved by the Board of Examiners.

Alternatives available to Employers
There are 3 alternatives open to employers who are considering Traineeships:
1. An approved provider such as Leo Cussen Institute either offsite or in-house conducts training in Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Lawyer’s Skills and Risk Management and the employer arranges all other training.
2. An approved provider such as Leo Cussen Institute conducts training either offsite or in-house at your firm/organisation in all mandatory and required elective topics.
3. Graduates complete a PLT course such as Leo Cussen Institute’s Practical Training Course. Employers may sponsor the Graduate to undertake the course.
Alternatives 1 & 2: Traineeship Program
Leo Cussen Institute is an approved PLT provider and will be providing training in each of the compulsory and elective topics.

Alternative 3: PLT Course in 2009
The Leo Cussen Institute PLT course in 2009 will be structured as follows (subject to approvals):
· 2 intakes per year (January/July)
· 6 month course including workplace placement
· On-site and on-line delivery options
Some important Information on the new Traineeship scheme
· In addition to the training, trainees must complete at least 12 months of supervised workplace training
· A person may not supervise more than one trainee at a time unless they have prior approval from the Board of Examiners
· Supervisors at the end of the Traineeship must ensure trainees are competent in each mandatory topic and optional electives prior to Admission to practise
· The employer of a trainee must implement a training plan for each trainee which is approved by the Board of Examiners
· A training plan has to set out, among other things:
a) the period of supervised workplace training
b) how the parties propose to ensure that the trainee acquires and demonstrates appropriate understanding of and competence in the elective and mandatory topics
c) who will supervise the trainee
d) the name of the approved PLT provider or provider who will conduct any course of instruction and assessment

You have no need to worry about training plans, hiring trainers and assessors or instruction timetables. Your graduate employee returns to you admitted to practice and able to take on the load of a first year practitioner.
